Shaping
the NSP Future is in Your Hands
The
2011 National Board Election is set to kick off on
October 15. All members have the right to vote, and all
members are encouraged to vote. However, why should
members care, and why is a strong national board
important?
NSP
board members play many roles. They are the
organization's top policymakers, fundraisers, and
strategic thinkers. They ensure compliance with legal
and financial requirements, enforce ethical guidelines,
and fervently champion NSP's mission. In addition, they
collaborate closely with the division directors and
leadership at every level in the organization, as well
as serve as the NSP's ambassadors with sponsors,
government and regulatory agencies, industry
organizations, and the public. Essentially, the future
of the organization is in large part in their hands. As
a member, you can personally take part in shaping the
future of NSP by selecting the candidates that you
believe are best suited for the job.
The
electronic voting system has made voting fast and easy
for you. Anytime between October 15 and December 1,
simply sign on to the NSP Member Services website and
click the "Vote Here" link in the Quick Links box. For
your convenience, candidate information and bios are
available in the fall issue of the Ski Patrol Magazine,
or on the NSP website by clicking here.
Thank
you for all you do for the NSP. See you on the slopes.
Sincerely,
Tim

Mark
your calendars! The annual NSP Online Auction is right
around the corner. Bidding will begin on November 24,
and will remain open until December 9, with a special
preview beginning November 14. Don't miss out on this
awesome opportunity for great deals and products. Click here for early registration,
and keep an eye out for an e-invite coming
soon!
With the
chill in the air, thoughts of new gear are starting to
manifest in our heads. Now is a great time to start
exercising the NSP member benefit of pro-dealing new
gear. However, a great responsibility comes with this
discount. Pro-deals are not an entitlement. Our sponsors
and industry partners provide us with great deals in
exchange for exposure to their target markets. We are
highly-credible references and advertisers for
them.
It's
not enough to use all that new gear in front of guests
and locals at your local area; when you're out there
using the product, talk about how much you like it (and
if you don't, please be respectful and don't bad mouth
it).
Let
people know about your gear and where they can buy it.
It is still our great responsibility to show some love
to the local shop that may have missed out on the sale
of those skis, boots, or long underwear. They still need
to keep the heat on and the doors open. More and more
retailers are feeling the pinch of this tough economy,
and it's our responsibility to help steer friends,
guests, and clients toward buying gear from NSP sponsors
at your favorite local shop. Further, when you can, our
sponsors ask that you support your local retailer by
having them mount your skis, fit your boots, or simply
by buying wax or lip balm. Introduce yourself, make them
your friends, buy something, and do what you can to make
sure you are supporting them.
Here
are some other things you can do to help them
out:
- Outside of other pros, never discuss pro-deals or
pro pricing.
- Do not jeopardize pro-deals by sharing, even with
your friends and family.
- Do not take prime shop time to try on or test
gear; they need to make the full-price sales.
Thank
you for supporting NSP sponsors by buying, wearing, and
talking about their products! Have a great
season!

purchase consulting firm)

A
Message from Education Director Darcy
Hanley
Over
the last month, I have had the pleasure of meeting many
of our dedicated OEC instructors who been working
diligently on OEC Fifth Edition rollouts. My
final trip will be to the Alaska Division. The Pro
Division will do their rollout October 12 and October
26. As of August 31, 11,000 copies of the book have been
sold, making it the most successful publication release
in NSP's history.
I
also want to extend my thanks to many of you who have
provided revisions in content. These have been collected
and researched by both our team and Brady. Theses
revisions have been posted on the Brady
website/MYNSPKit. The revisions are listed by chapter,
and are downloadable.
I
am happy to announce that the OEC Refresher Committee
has been revised. Deb Endley has been named the new
chair. The committee members are Nancy
Pitstick of Brighton Ski Patrol in Utah, Thomas Rabaglia
of Cascade Mountain Ski Patrol in Wisconsin, Cathy
Setzer of Boyce Park Ski Patrol in Pennsylvania,
Jeannine Mogan of Three Rivers Ski Patrol in Minnesota,
Shelia Daly of Wachussett Ski Patrol in Massachusetts,
Morgan Armstrong of the Southern Admin Patrol in
Virginia, and Jodie Jeffers of the Mt. Hood Summit Ski
Patrol in Oregon. Thank you to all previous
Refresher Committee members who competently wrote the
Refresher Study Guide for the past 10
years.
The
final chapters of the new Mountain Travel and Rescue
Manual are with the editor. We are on track to meet
the publication deadline and the fall release in 2012.
NSP
has released four public service announcements that will
be available for your use October 1. These PSAs will
also be played in ski area base lodges care of SkiTV.
Please go to the NSP website to access the link and download these
safety announcements. Let us know how you are using
them, as well as any feedback you may have.
Fall
is here, and you are getting ready for another season!
It will be a great
one! |
Gov.
Brown vetoes California helmet legislation
For
the second consecutive year, a bill that would have
required skiers and snowboarders under the age of 18 to
wear a helmet on California ski slopes failed. Governor
Jerry Brown vetoed the legislation, SB 105, in early
September, in part because he feels that it is an issue
that should be decided by parents. In his message, he
stated, "While I appreciate the value of wearing a ski
helmet, I am concerned about the continuing and
seemingly inexorable transfer of authority from parents
to the state. Not every human problem deserves a
law."
In
2010, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a helmet
bill, but vetoed the companion bill that would have
regulated ski area operations, and so the helmet bill
did not become law.
Earlier
this year, New Jersey became the first state to pass a
helmet bill into law that requires skiers and
snowboarders under the age of 18 to wear a helmet.
Parents of children who violate the law face first-time
fines of $25 and fines of $100 for secondary
violations. |
