The OEC 5th edition
The OEC ITs, OEC Division supervisors, Division directors, and the National Medical Committee have been receiving e-mail communication through the month of March. The Division OEC supervisors should be in communication with the OEC ITs concerning the rollout of the 5th edition for their respective divisions.
Ordering Information: OEC 5th edition, ship date May 6, 2011
On March 28, all patrollers may place advance purchase orders for the OEC 5th edition by going through the NSP website (www.nsp.org), logging on, getting the coupon and clicking the link for Brady Books. The book purchase will provide access to MyNSPKit for all the student materials; an access code will be printed on the inside front cover. The price for a printed copy through the Brady website is $65.60 plus sales tax. (Note that the price on Brady's website will read $87.47, the book's retail price; the NSP discount will appear upon checkout, after you redeem your coupon.) There is free shipping on orders of less than 50 copies. Bulk orders (50 or more books) must go through customer service at Brady 800-922-0579, and will be assessed an 8-10 percent shipping charge.
Orders of 50 books or more should be spaced 60 minutes apart so that your credit card will not be flagged by Brady. OEC books will start shipping May 6.
The shipping time typically will take 24-to-72 hours, depending upon the U.P.S. zone in which you reside. Alaska and Hawaii will take 7-to-10 business days. On returns, full credit for your purchase will be honored up to 15 months after purchase with an invoice and in new condition. Refunds take 4-to-6 weeks to process.
OEC Candidates: Candidates should contact their instructor of record, get the coupon code and log into www.bradybooks.com.
E-book: If patrollers want to purchase an e-book, they will need to go to www.coursesmart.com. There is an 18-month subscription fee of $44.00. The e-book is not downloadable onto a reader such as Kindle or Nook. (These are not textbook-friendly devices at this point, although it's likely they will be in time, and OEC will find its way there.) Both links will be available on the NSP website. The e-book has complete functionality-note-taking, highlighting, printing-as well as an iPad application. (Download a CourseSmart app from the iTunes store first.) There will be a renewal fee at the end of 18 months. The e-book price may be different at that time. The e-book will be available April 25.
The OEC 5th edition Instructor Manual will be on the Brady site and it is completely downloadable at no charge. You can print your own copy. This will be available May 6. The manual will be located under MyBradyKit/Resource Central; select myNSPkit from here. Instructors may obtain their instructor access code by going to the Instructor Resources on the NSP site.
The Instructor Development Course is going the distance. Beginning March 30, any patroller may
take the ID course online using www.nspelearning.com. You can create an account and begin to take
the course online. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate that can be presented to the
instructor of record. The registration for an ID course must still be done through NSP by the
instructor of record. The above link will be available on the NSP website. The book is downloadable,
and there is a $15.00 charge to take the online course.

I would like to introduce Derk Renwick to you. Derk will be replacing me as the Region Mountain Travel and Rescue Advisor beginning July 1, 2010.
Derk is a patroller at Buck Hill. Some of you met him at the past Region Meeting, and some of you may have met him
with MTR classes he has helped to teach.
Derk brings a great interest in the outdoors activities, with a varied background of experience in mountaineering.
He has participated in many activities, and guess what? He has a deep interest in equipment and gear. So, I expect
that his outdoor skills, knowledge, and experiences will help to add a tremendous amount to this program, and what
he will bring to the students. Maybe you have read the excellent articles he has written for the Region newsletter?
Through his work experience he brings a strong managerial background. So, he will be a great asset not only to the
MTR program, but also to the Region and it's NSP members.
